The weldability of modified 4330 steel and centrifugally cast 5 per cent chromium steel were investigated by using the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute hot ductility test. The microstructure in the heat-affected zone at various locations was reproduced in Charpy impact test specimens which were tested at various temperatures from -60 to 212F. It was found that under the same welding conditions employed in the welding of the M68 105mm gun bore evacuator, the weldability and low temperature impact strength were better in the modified 4330 steel than in the centrifugally cast 5 per cent chromium steel.
