Abstract:

The objective of this program is to develop mosquito repellents for topical or systemic use that will be more potent, longer lasting, and afford more uniform protection than those currently available. The testing of compounds of mosquito repellency was continued. Repellency data was derived from an electronic bitometer-timer apparatus which yields the percentage of total time of actual biting, and from the percentage of mosquitoes that engorged blood during the test period. The sum of these two parameters, the repellency index, was analyzed for statistical significance for differences from controls in a specialized digital computer program. Substances that resemble the structure of the neuroinhibitor, gamma-aminobutyric acid GABA, in terms of their electronic distribution, are generally significantly repellent at low levels of application.
