Abstract:

Dispersive doppler and faraday rotation data from 79 passes of 1961 Omicron 1 and 1961 Alpha-Eta 1 recorded at Johnston Island between 17 May and 15 Jul 62 were reduced, primarily by an improved faraday-doppler technique, to obtain electron content and effective ionospheric height data. Significant results obtained were mean maximum low-latitude content, 3.5 plus or minus 0.5 x 10 to the 17th power electronssq meter early post-sunrise rate of production 2.3 plus or minus 0.3 x 10 to the 13th power electronssq metersec or, for an equivalent maximum electron density 1.4 plus or minus 0.3 x 10 to the 12th power electronscu meter, and 6.4 plus or minus 12 x 10 to the 7th power electronscu metersec. The mean effective ionospheric height was 378 plus or minus 23 km. A description of the improved, hybrid faraday-doppler technique is included. Author
