Abstract:
An inexpensive ducted impellor flowmeter has been developed for investigation of the internal kinematics of shallow water waves. The flowmeter has a dynamic velocity range from 0.0 to 15.7 feet per second, a hyperbolic response to axial flow, and a cosine response to off-axis flow. General hydrodynamic considerations in duct design are discussed and are applied to the design of the flowmeter. Dynamic testing showed that the flowmeters response to orbital flow, similar to that found in shallow water waves, correlated excellently with the axial calibration of the meter. Author
