Abstract:

Ceramic fibers are characterized by hardness and strength due to low structural defects and surface cleavage. Ceramic fiber whiskers surpass steel whiskers in density, strenth, and heat-resistance. Ceramic fiber whiskers can be adhered and protected by adhesives for use in place of steel as structural material for high temperature duties. Fine ceramic fiber whiskers under two microns in diameter are available. Strength of some ceramic fiber whiskers has approached theoretical values. Some ceramic fibers have been applied to the spacecraft industry. Problem areas in ceramic fiber production are the high cost, and the difficulties in application and processing. Author
