Abstract:

The problems of designing a chamber to measure absolutely the ion number densities when moving with supersonic velocity through the atmosphere are briefly discussed. An attempt is made to design such a chamber, matching other already existing chambers in some essential points. A design sketch is given, the first tests are described. This first attempt towards an absolute ion chamber is made to provide a possibility for wind tunnel calibration of chambers to be flown by rockets. The altitude range considered is from about 30 km to about 80 km in the terrestrial atmosphere. Author
