Abstract:

Four methods of extracting factors from binary data were compared on real and hypothetical data matrices. The four were factor analysis on product moment phi, phi corrected for attenuation phiphi max or min, Lingoes Multiscalogram Guttman dimensional scaling, and Tuckers Dimensional Analysis of Binary Data DABD. Problems of techniques and error criteria decision rules were discussed. The second part dealt with the application of these methods to 100 of the MMPI items. The dimensionalities of the item space produced by the methods were then compared. Author
