Abstract:

The propagation of strong cylindrical waves in cold plasma is studied theoretically and the results are compared with an experiment. The propagation of the wave is considered for regimes where dissipative effects are sufficiently strong, so that nonlinear effects arise over distances much smaller than that of the radius of plasma under study. The current sheet driving the magnetic perturbance is described as exponential or sinusoidal in time. The experimental results on the properties of the wave were obtained by means of magnetic probes at various radii in the plasma column. The comparison of the experimental results with the computer output is limited since the latter assumes a constant dissipation factor. However the qualitative agreement is good. Author
