Abstract:
It was recently proposed that metal shot that would disintegrate under moist conditions would be useful to prevent the ingestion of spent shot by feeding water fowl and thus reduce the incidence of poisoning that is said to occur when massive shot are composed of toxic materials such as lead. For ballistic reasons the shot should be as dense as possible and have sufficient strength in compression to withstand the acceleration in the gun barrel from the propellant as well as the impact of hitting the target. Spherical agglomeration offers a possible process for making balls meeting these requirements, or even for making more permanent metal spheres without using conventional shot towers.
