Abstract:
Analysis of the half-widths of the individual rotational absorption lines of N2 at high resolution delta lambda 0.038A indicates that all of the lines between 800 and 1000A are broadened by predissociation. This implies that photo-dissociation of atmospheric N2 by solar radiation may be as much as 10,000 times greater than assumed previously and may, indeed, contribute significantly to the over-all rate of production of atomic nitrogen in the upper atmosphere.
