Abstract:

The research and design of a semi-flush type of VHF, transmitting and receiving antenna array is reported. The circularly polarized array is electronically steerable to four quadrants, overhead plus two optional, orthogonal, plane polarized, broad beam modes. VSWR and Pattern characteristics are included plus data on hardware details and installation techniques. To assist in the evaluation of the ATS-B satellite, and future ATS systems an FAA C-135 N-96 flight-check jet was specially equipped with C-DD Antennas. A special, high gain VHF antenna array for use on the C-135 was developed. The antenna array consists of a nine element, essentially flush mounted system of C-DD antennas which provide selectable high-gain VHF beams, allowing the aircraft to track the ATS. The C-DD antennas are a recent invention and in this adaptation result in high efficiency, tunable, VHF antennas that project less than 3.4 centimeters from the aircraft surface in streamlined covers.
