Cyclotron resonance echoes have been explored experimentally and theoretically. The phenomenon is adequately explained in the low electron density region omega sub p omega sub c by a model involving the nonlinear loss introduced by the velocity dependence of the electron-neutral particle collision frequency. The effect of electron diffusion is treated formally and qualitative agreement found with experimental results. Quantitative answers on electron energy and momentum relaxation processes should result from careful experimental control of diffusion. For electron densities such that omega sub p or omega sub c the phenomenon is more complex and quantitative results will require a deeper understanding of the resonances which are being excited in the plasma. Reprints of work associated or inspired by this study are included. A second part of this report is a brief survey of echo phenomena, in an attempt to make this effect plausible and to point out its generality in systems made up of collections of resonators. Author
