The original intent of the investigation was to bring to bear upon electronic circuit design problems those powerful mathematical optimization techniques which could be implemented on digital computers. That this goal was overwhelmingly realized is both a great satisfaction as well as a profound stimulus to further research. A simple network theoretic interpretation of the necessary conditions of mathematical optimization in terms of an adjoint model has facilitated computations in terms of existing network analysis programs. In all phases of the study two major problems have consistently recurred 1 The enunciation of electronic circuit design goals in terms of a functional to which mathematical optimization applies and 2 the necessity to employ gradient information effectively and economically.
