The development of the Tan-O-Quil-QM process for the treatment of feathers and down is described. The process, involving the use of a tanning agent and a water repellent, is applicable to both landfowl and waterfowl feather filling materials. Feathers treated by this process, in addition to having an increased filling power that is durable to laundering, are free from dust, are exceptionally clean and will not develop an odor even when wet. Chicken feathers so treated may be used as a partial replacement for waterfowl feathers and down in pillows. Crushed Tan-O-Quil-QM treated chicken feathers in pillows have been found to be an improvement over untreated crushed feathers and have retained their increased bulk even after more than two years of continuous use.
