Abstract:

The report is a brief discussion of the first experiment in study of the operation of a maser on an artificial earth satellite. It was found that the maser operated normally at different altitudes above the earth, within and outside the earths radiation belt, when the satellite was illuminated by the sun and when it was in the earths shadow. The relative frequency stability of the maser during one observation contact was approximately equals 10 to the minus 11th power. Between contacts the maser frequency changed by a value somewhat greater than 10 to the minus 10th power. A system of two-directional radio communication with the satellite ensured the possibility of measuring the maser frequency with an accuracy to 10 to the minus 11th power. Author
