The reaction of 1,7-dicarbaclosooctaborane with CH34NBH4 produces ionic products which are, in turn, converted to a mixture of lower carboranes. In this manner the parent unsubstituted CB5H9 carborane was obtained in approximately 20 yield. This reaction sequence affords the first example of the extrusion of a single carbon atom from a two-carbon carborane. Author
