The study comprises two elements. It is, in the first place, a central place study. As such, it is based on groupings of the retail activities located in, and the trade areas of 337 urban places and smaller centers contained in an area of 1,200 square miles in the southern German state of Baden-Wurttemberg. For a number of years geographers have been attempting to achieve greater generality in central place studies and, thus, the second purpose of this study is to compare its principal results with those of both classical studies in the same area and modern studies completed elsewhere, to see what empirical generalizations may be made at this time.
