Abstract:

Bacterial luminescence reactions bear no direct relationship to mitosis. The luminescent reaction is biochemically specific and is independent of respiration. Bacterial luminescence reactions are closely connected with respiration only at the dehydrogenase and flavin level. At the dehydrogenase section of the electron transfer chain, the luminescence reaction is not independent. The luminescence reaction becomes independent and specific after it branches off from the flavin link of the respiratory chain. A constant fraction of energy which passes through the oxidation channel is expended on luminescence. The bioluminescence of bacteria represents a direct leakage of energy from the oxidation channel, and it equals .0001. Author
