Abstract:

Zone melting was used to produce oriented composite materials of off-eutectic composition. The zone melting of camphor - anthracene mixtures was observed with a microscope. This system was chosen as a transparent low-temperature analog of the technologically important refractory carbide - graphite mixtures. Irregular lamellar structures were produced at high values of the ratio of the temperature gradient G to the zoning rate V. The lamellar spacing was an order of magnitude greater than the corresponding spacing for eutectic metal systems. Oriented dendritic structures were produced at low values of GV.
