Four experiments were carried out to investigate the effect of flow rate on parotid fluid specific gravity at different levels of stimulation and to compare parotid fluid to submaxillo-sublingual fluid in this regard. A strong positive correlation was found between parotid flow rate and specific gravity when either masticatory or gustatory exogenous stimulants were employed. On the other hand, a highly significant negative correlation was found between flow rate and specific gravity when no exogenous stimulants were utilized. This mechanism reversal at the very low rate of flow is due to either a relative increase in water reabsorption, a dominance of the secretory function of ductal elements over reabsorptive processes, or a combination of both factors.
