Abstract:

This is the second of a series of reports which are directly concerned with the problem of simulating meteoritic impact on high flying vehicles. Here we are concerned with laboratory methods of producing high speed dust impact. A factor in the consideration of acceleration methods is the physical size of the accelerator. An equally important consideration is the cost and construction time of a suitable facility. The physical properties of the test particles should be preserved. Also, there should be no solid contaminants, and gas contaminants should not condense to liquids or solids over the acceleration path. Finally, if possible, the particles should not be overheated.
