Abstract:

An investigation has been made of a chemical propellant system using Be, O2, and H2. Be and O2 are burned in stoichiometric proportions in the presence of excess H2, which acts somewhat like the working fluid in a nuclear rocket. Specific impulses in excess of 450 lb- seclb can be obtained with this system Pc 1000 psi, Pe 14.7 psi. Maximum performance is obtained if solid or liquid BeO and gaseous H2 maintain complete thermal and mechanical equilibrium within the nozzle. Author
