The report develops a linearized theory for an infinitely wide, perfectly flexible foil bearing subjected to small fluctuations in tape tension. The theory neglects foil mass, but includes fluid compressibility. An experiment has been performed which verifies the theory in the ranges of speed and tension for which compressibility is negligible, but which are also the usual ranges for tape drive applications.
