A simple procedure is proposed to simulate the cyclic variation of the thermal neutron absorption cross sections of the odd-Z, even-N nuclei. The assumption is made that the cross sections vary with a the number of protons in the last open proton shell, and b the number of neutron holes in the last open neutron shell. With the major nuclear shells as a basis and with variations as to which subshells are included, empirical results are obtained and compared with the experimental cross-section curve. Preliminary indications are that the proposed method gives results that follow the trend of the experimental data. Author
