The report describes the intrinsic resistive transition in small pieces of superconducting material. Two recent theoretical approaches are described a theory of the disappearance of resistance as T approaches T sub c the transition temperature from above and a theory of the appearance of resistance in thin filaments as T approaches T sub c from below. Although the approaches mentioned appear to be, and indeed physically are, two ways of looking at the same phenomenon, the theories are quite distinct. Author
