Abstract:

The report examines how a temporally dispersive bounded anisotropic medium affects the propagation of electromagnetic waves due to spatially confined transient excitation. The medium is taken to be a cold plasma bounded by a perfectly conducting plane and subjected to an externally applied z-directed d.c. magnetic field parallel to the plane. The excitation is that of a magnetic line source imbedded in the plasma and directed parallel to the d.c. magnetic field. This source configuration has been chosen because it is capable of exciting surface waves along the boundary. Exact expressions and asymptotic approximations for the direct, reflected, and surface wave magnetic fields at a distant observation point are presented for arbitrary observation times. Emphasis is placed on approximate graphical considerations for the determination of the transient field and also on a physical interpretation of various phenomena. Detailed numerical calculations have been made for various parameter ranges and serve to verify conclusions reached by the graphical procedure. The results obtained highlight transient processes excited by a localized source in a bounded anisotropic environment, and in particular the nature of surface wave propagation under transient conditions.
