The fluorine-induced explosions of IBA, 1,2-DB, 2,3-Db and M-2,3-DB were studied by admitting measured amounts of F2 to the vapors of these compounds. Whereas very small amounts of F2 are required to produce explosions with IBA, 1,2-DB and 2,3-DB, substantial amounts of F2 were required to produce an observable luminous flash with M-2,3-DB. Samples of IBA and 1,3-DP were decomposed to completion with F2 and the decomposition products analyzed by mass spectroscopy. The resulting data is used to propose a reaction scheme. Data was obtained on thermally induced explosions of 1,2-DB and 2,3-DB. Analogous to the explosion mechanism for 1,3-DP chain branching occurs by decomposition of free DB radicals to yield F and NF radicals, and chains are broken by diffusion of DB radicals to the vessel surface.
