This report describes the scope and results of the Device X3B57 Feasibility Demonstration Program. Device 3B57 utilizes an array of seismic transducers on the perimeter of a target scoring area to detect the seismic wave generated by a bomb or rocket impact. A digital computer then calculates the impact point from the differences in the times of arrival of the signal at each transducer. The feasibility demonstration was designed to establish the range and scoring accuracy that could be achieved. Seismic instrumentation was installed at Yuma, Arizona, and Cherry Point, North Carolina, test sites the scoring technique was evaluated using test charges, practice bombs, and rockets. It was demonstrated that the specified scoring accuracy could be achieved for target scoring area radii up to 500 feet. In order to achieve this accuracy it was necessary to calibrate the seismic propagation velocity within the scoring area to compensate for anomalies in the earth. The masking of signal times of arrival by aircraft noise during some runs is a problem area that requires further experimental effort. Author
