Abstract:

The strongest argument for economic aid to Indonesia is in terms of the strategic interests of the United States. With a population of 113 million and a sense of manifest destiny in Southeast Asia and in the Indian Ocean, Indonesia could play a useful role in the future as a stabilizing factor in the area. A relatively strong Indonesia would oppose politically and diplomatically Chinese attempts to establish hegemony in Southeast Asia, and Soviet moves to assert supremacy in the Indian Ocean. It could also make available military manpower to the smaller countries of Southeast Asia, in the context of a purely regional system of collective security. Author
