An exhaustive literature search was made to gain an insight into the origin, organization, and activities of the pioneering Soviet rocket development organizations-the Gas Dynamics Laboratory GDL, the Group for the Study of Reactive Propulsion Gird, and the Reactive Scientific Research Institute RNII. Although the literature search covered the period from the late twenties to the present, most of the pertinent information was found in the literature published during the late sixties, particularly in the writings of Professor G. V. Petrovich. According to the available information, these three organizations the GDL, GIRD, and RNII were organized and were active during the period 1928--1938. Prior to 1932, the GIRD was a non-government-supported society composed of scientists, engineers, and technicians interested in rocketry and interplanetary flights. Author
