Abstract:

The error caused by thermal expansion of rotor wheels in gas turbines during length measurements is investigated. To account for the differential expansion of the various blade and wheel elements of the rotor, a compound expansion coefficient is derived. It is shown that to minimize thermal expansion errors the measuring instrument and the turbine rotor must reach thermal equilibrium and that a composite measuring scale with an effective expansion coefficient equal to alpha pr of the rotor should be used.
