Abstract:

A technique is described for impregnating polyurethane foam with PETN. The method consists of soaking up the foam in a saturated PETNacetone solution and precipitating the crystals within the foam by rapid dilution with water. Using foam approx. 1 inch in diameter, precipitation from a solution at the boiling point results in the explosive loading density of approx. 0.45 gmcc. Satisfactory agreement of the average loading densities with prediction, based on the solubility data for PETN in acetone, is obtained for the temperature range of 20C to 58C for foams of approx. 1 inch and approx. 5 12 inches in diameter.
