To determine early hematologic response to mixed neutron-gamma irradiation, twenty Macaca mulatta monkeys were exposed to pulsed doses of 2, 500, 3,750, and 5,000 rads. Hematologic data at 4 hours postirradiation indicated a marked leukocytosis in all groups. The cellular increase was due to the increase of neutrophils contrasted to the lymphocytes, which decreased to less than half their baseline value. There was also a thrombocytosis at 4 hours postirradiation. Serum enzyme concentrations were determined with observed increases of lactic dehydrogenase and glutamic oxalacetic transaminase however, the response was highly variable.
