The precise marking of control and map coordinate transfer and pass points is a critical function in the compilation of accurate maps and charts from aerial photographs. To be effective, these marks must be minute enough to not obstruct terrain and cultural features. At the same time, the marks also must be sufficiently visible to be located by an operator. The approach of using a laser to burn the marks through the same optics that the operator uses for viewing is most desirable. An investigation into the factors and related considerations involved was accomplished to determine the best method, techniques, and instrument design for fulfillment of the contract objectives.
