The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of ophthalmologically defined threshold and subthreshold macular burns upon the subjective visual acuity of the rhesus monkey Macaca mulatta. Subjective visual acuity was defined in terms of lever pressing behavior in the presence of Landolt rings. The three different burn treatments used were 100, 80, and 50 percent of the light energy necessary to produce an ophthalmologically defined threshold burn. In addition there was a control group which received no light exposure. Nonreversible decrements in subjective visual acuity were obtained only for the group that received the 100 percent burn treatment. Qualifications of the above finding are discussed. Author
