Abstract:
An assay for the analysis of iron in Mesabi iron ore has been developed by the reaction of the iron with the chelating compound, 1,1,1,2,2,3,3-heptafluoro-7,7-dimethyl-4,6-octanedione Hfod, with subsequent analysis of the volatile metal chelate by gas chromatography. Several metal chelates were synthesized by the direct reaction of the metal or metal compound with a chelating compound. Most of the rare earth metals were found to react directly with Hfod in microreactor capsules. Investigations were initiated to determine if the interstitial gases in metals can be identified and measured by gas chromatography. The metal and the chelating compound are sealed in a glass capillary and heated. The metal is dissolved, releasing the entrapped gases in the capsule. The contents then are analyzed by gas chromatography. An investigation of the effects of radio frequency energy on the reaction rate of metals with chelating compounds was initiated. The reaction rates were compared to those obtained from heating the reactants in an oven. Author
