Experiments and theoretical developments for the acoustic interaction among small 20 kHz magnetostrictive-stack sonar transducers in linear arrays of two and three transducers and planar arrays of three and four at an air-water surface are described. The interaction radiation resistance and reactance due to acoustic loading were studied as functions of number, spacing, relative position and relative phase of the transducers. The effect of a small number of compressed hollow aluminum tubes in controlling the acoustic interaction between the transducers was studied. Other experiments were performed with a low-velocity liquid placed in front of the transducers in order to reduce the interaction. Finally, experiments were conducted with hard metal and soft styrofoam plane barriers or boundaries in order to control the acoustic interaction between the transducers. The theoretical development for this work was based on the model of interacting dipoles in an infinite medium. It is hoped that the results of this basic study can be used in the design of more efficient sonar arrays using small air-backed transducers at a pc rubber face. Author
