Abstract:
The study is an attempt to establish the complements of the Russian verbs of motion, and to classify them as obligatory or optional. This information is an essential part of the procedure of coding government patterns for all Russian predicatives - a sine qua non for sentence analysis in machine translation. The first part of the study contains an analysis based on semantic criteria. The closeness of the semantic value of the prefix to the semantic value of the complement determines whether the type of complement will be regarded as obligatory or optional. The second part of the study contains a statistical analysis based on material containing approximately 406,000 running text words taken from a contemporary Soviet writer. Author
