Abstract:

The detection and quantitative estimation of amines by the production of a volatile product from a reaction of the amine was investigated. The reaction of several tertiary amines with acyl halides produced the hydrohalide salt of the amine by hydrolysis by atmospheric moisture or by proton abstraction from the solvent. Conversion of the amines to the amine boranes by reaction with diborane and hydrolysis to give hydrogen provided a method of estimation of amines. The amine boranes were found to form easily and to be stable to hydrolytic conditions which would destroy the excess diborane. The amine boranes formed from phenylborane were more rapidly hydrolyzed when sulfuric-acetic acid mixture was used, and this procedure at this preliminary stage seems to be promising for an analytical method.
