Abstract:
The Instructional Management System IMS is a computer-based classroom information system being jointly developed by System Development Corporation and the Southwest Regional Laboratory. IMS, currently operating in two California elementary schools, gives teachers both diagnostic and prescriptive information to aid them in making instructional decisions about the pacing of the class, the reassignment of students to different ability groups, the administration of supplementary remedial materials, etc. This paper describes the design objectives of IMS, its operational functions, and preliminary data concerning its effectiveness.
