Abstract:
MolybdenumII halides readily react with alcoholic solutions of either sodium methoxide or ethoxide at room temperature to give crystalline coordination compounds of the type Na2Mo6X8OR6 in which the Mo6X84 cluster behaves like a hexacoordinate coordination center. More vigorous treatment of molybdenumII chloride with sodium methoxide in methanol yields the crystalline compound Na2Mo6OCH38OCH36 in which both ligand and cluster chloride ions are replaced by methoxy groups. This compound appears to contain the cluster Mo6OCH384 analogous to the well known Mo6X84 on the basis of magnetic properties, oxidation state of the molybdenum, proton magnetic resonance, conductivity, molecular weight, and infrared spectra.
