Abstract:

This contract series has carried out studies of reststrahlen films. These are films whose crystallite structure is sufficiently well developed to produce the high metallic-like reflectance characteristic of the infrared reststrahlen band of the parent massive crystalline material. The development of reststrahlen films has two broad purposes first, for infrared reflection filtering purposes in the classical manner, with the advantage of sizes limited only by the size of the vacuum coater available and second, to furnish new film components with unique optical properties for incorporating in infrared coatings designed for filtering and thermal emittance control. The present quarterly report describes induced transmission filters utilizing MgO and LiF reststrahlen films at wavelengths within their reststrahlen bands, 14 to 25 microns and 15 to 33 microns respectively. The design steps are enumerated and justified by literature references to their theoretical background, or proofs are furnished where these have not been found in the open literature. Author
