Abstract:
Two phenomena dominate the formation of tombolos the local swell current due mainly to diffraction which contributes on the one hand to the lateral supply of sand and on the other hand to the creation of a sedimentation front and the zone of relative calm which exists in the lee of the detached breakwater where the sedimentation of solid particles is facilitated. This sedimentation is possible under certain circumstances at the rear of a detached breakwater, circumstances which depend mainly, for a given shore, either on the length of the structure or on its distance from the shoreline.
