Utilizing the Bohm-Pines formulation, we have calculated the optical absorbing power to second order of a high density electron gas in the long wavelength limit. The optical properties of the electron gas contained within a thin slab are shown to be markedly different from those of a bulk gas, provided that the lifetime of the excited particles is sufficiently long for the particles to feel their containment within the slab. We discuss bulk and thin film absorption processes which are predicted to be within the range of experimental observation in certain free electron-like materials, such as the alkali metals and n-doped semiconductors. The possible utilization of these predicted phenomena for laser intensity detection over a wide spectral region is briefly discussed. Author
