Abstract:
Results of calculations to determine specific yield functions for IGY neutron monitors are reported for vertically incident protons in the range of 0.5 to 3 Gvc. The Monte Carlo method is used to calculate secondary nucleon flux intensities at various depths in the atmosphere. Experimental data on neutron monitor response are employed to relate the calculated flux data to count rates and hence to specific yields. The specific yield function was also calculated as a function of the angle of incidence of the primary cosmic ray flux. The results show that a significant fraction of counts in a neutron monitor is produced by particles incident from directions other than the vertical. Author
