Abstract:
Although a material posesses a high degree of strength at ordinary temperatures, it may weaken considerably at high temperatures such as those encountered during missile flights through the atmosphere. This report presents the results of an investigation of the strength of a sandwich-type foam-core insulating material under conditions combining mechanical loading with simulated aerodynamic heating. The results showed that of the specimens tested, those which had been coated with a heat-resistant material offered the best solution in the search for a lightweight, heat-resistant, foam-core insulation.
