Abstract:
A study of the propagation of low frequency hydromagnetic waves in an ionospheric duct centered around the Alfven speed minimum near the F2 ionization peak. An inhomogeneous waveguide is considered in the presence of a uniform magnetic field, the case treated being that of horizontal propagation in the plane of the magnetic meridian. It is shown that each band has a low frequency cutoff and that the existence of such a cutoff is a consequence of the boundary conditions rather than of attenuation. Numerical solutions of the dispersion equation are obtained for the two lowest bands for each of the conditions considered. Author
