Abstract:

The study program for the operating reliability of electronic computers carried out at the Model Laboratory of Convair, San Diego, includes the study of the following problems 1 Are failures of any particular tube types and components, for example, power supply or amplifier abnormally frequent. 2 Do individual components fail abnormally with respect to the average for that type of component. 3 Does the number of failures considerably increase after intermittent operation. 4 Is there a relation between ambient conditions and rate of failure particularly, do components fail more frequently in hot parts of the machine than in cold parts. 5 Is it more economical to use more expensive types of electron tubes instead of standard tubes. 6 Is preventive maintenance of advantage. 7 Of what advantage is marginal checking. Statistical data were obtained of this installation which contains approximately 560 operation amplifiers and related equipment. Author
