Abstract:

An etchant is described that imparts color to the surface of hafnium and to zirconium carbide metallographic specimens. These colors not only provide a sharp delineation of individual grains, but also define the boundaries of eutectic colonies that contain both graphite and carbide. For a given specimen, similar orientations of grains may be inferred from similar coloration. Author
