Total heart replacement pumps from the Harry Diamond Laboratories and the Avco-Kantrowitz left ventricular assist pumps were evaluated according to the following basic design an engineering evaluation of pumps and control systems in vitro testing of pump and controls system using a circulation analog modified Hydrospace Mock Circulation Loop in which Harry Diamond Laboratories pumps acted as analog right and left ventricles and in vivo acute and chronic pump implantations in miniature swine. The acute studies less than eight hours animal never recovers were designed to evaluate important hemodynamic parameters pressure, flow, and resistance relationships, with important pump and control variables such as synchronization, timing, duration of systolic and diastolic activation, drive and filling pressures, and stroke volume. The chronic studies more than eight hours animal recovers were designed to evaluate animal survival and important blood and organ function effects of mechanical pumping. Author
